Mojang’s Mojam Game: Catacomb Snatch

Catacomb Snatch the new Mojang game made for Mojam is now complete. Many people were concerned about how much would get done because of the lack of progress they saw on the streams, but in the end many have been surprised and pleased. Considering the time limit, the game seems pretty nice.

What is the point of Catacomb Snatch?

It is supposed to be a game where two people compete to move things from the center room, which has an item like a chalice back to their base. With only one person there really isn’t much point.

Catacomb Snatch Shooting

Controls and Uses

R: Puts down a railroad track or picks one up. On the track within the base pressing R makes a robot to gather from the middle of the map.

E: Picks up items, puts them down, and buys things from the store

Space: Shoots

Directional keys: movement

Turret: When put down it shoots enemies, bombs, or enemy spawners within a certain range.

Harvester: Collects coins dropped within a certain range. (Watch out these can crash your game.)

Bomb: When the bomb is placed and shot at it explodes. The bomb can blow up golden walls and enemies.

Robots: Collect material from the center of the map. They can be killed by your own turrets, stopped by anything in their path and can easily get confused about where to go. Make sure your track is easy to follow and check up on your robots or you will find yourself without them.

Catacomb Snatch Middle of Map

Here are robots collecting from the middle of the map.

Enemies

Bat: Easy to shoot down

Snake: Also easy to shoot down.

Mummy: Harder to kill than snake or bat.

Enemy Spawner: It is pretty self explanatory. Kill these to not have enemies spawn in the area. They will appear in places randomly.

Their were other enemies drawn by the artist hopefully some of those will be added later.

Overall Thoughts

This is a pretty decent game considering the time limit they imposed on themselves. It fits in pretty well with the themes and types of game they were expected to do. I don’t think that I will spend much time playing this game because there isn’t a whole lot going on. Over time it gets a bit frustrating having more enemies than ever despite putting down turrets and killing their spawners. There are still a lot of things they could improve if they take more time on it, like fixing the crashing harvesters and adding the enemies that didn’t make it in.  My favorite part of this game is pretty unexpected considering the source, but I think the visuals for this game are really nice.   Much better than I expected from a game made in such a short amount of time.

Don’t forget that along with the game they have released the source code and put up the soundtrack. We will post any more developments with Catacomb Snatch here.

The crashing was driving me nuts, even after I did look up the controls. Thanks for the tip that the harvesters caused the crashing. I was able to beat the game!

There are links floating around, and Jeb even said you could pirate it. We, obviously, can’t hand out piracy links here. Sorry.

If you donated you can find the source code together with the download of the game.
