Un-Go is about the Defeated Detective who reveals the truth only to have it hidden by the government.
In Un-Go, Shinjuuro is the Defeated Detective who never solves a case correctly. Unfortunately, we quickly learn that it isn’t true that he has never solve a case. The Defeated Detective has solved many cases, but the government hides the truth to save face. The person in charge of really “solving” cases and making the government’s official version is Rinroku Kaishou. Along the way through the show we find out all the lies and deception that were allowed to order to make people go along with what the government wanted during the war or to hide crimes even after the war.
The beginning of Un-Go had quite a bit of promise, but it didn’t look like it would live up to it. It looked like the defeated detective would always have his true version never taken seriously and the cases were going to be pretty boring. A few episodes into the series the show started to pick up and pull out some interesting cases which made the show a lot better. Thank goodness the writers figured out what to do with this show before it got too far in.
One of the main characters Inga is really interesting. Most of the time Inga appears as a young boy, but when things get heated up during a case there is a transformation sequence and the adult form appears. Inga does not stay this way long and uses the form to eat souls. Finding out more about this character is an interesting part of the show. Also the relationship between the Defeated Detective and Inga is surprising at the end.
The conspiracies are quite interesting and paint quite an interesting picture of the government of this world. Some of the things they are trying to hide are just ridiculous and never should have happened to begin with. It does make this series tick though. It all made me wonder when it was all going to be revealed if ever. Even the government can’t keep up a lie forever. Especially when new cases regarding the war are coming up all the time.
Overall this series is quite good. Once it picked up I wasn’t bored again. The characters and story all have drawn me into their world. The ending was even quite fitting with the story, which seems pretty rare theses days.
