State of Decay: Year-One attempts to improve every aspect of the classic game. Designers have succeeded in many ways. Is it enough for you to buy the game? We’ll discuss that for you today.
State of Decay: Year-One and Additional Characters
Those who own the original get access to a new character called Gurubani Kaur who has a signature cavalry sword. Characters from other modes like Lifeline are now in Breakdown as well.
Massive Graphical Improvements
All the textures, lighting and shadows are redone and improved. Even animations in combat are better than the older edition.
Supply Crates and State of Decay: Year-One
Perhaps the biggest change to the game is a new mission type. Supply crates are dropped throughout an area. If you can overcome any zombies nearby you can get incredible new weapons and items.
A Discount for Current State of Decay Owners
Those who own the game already get 33% off on the Steam release. It also has several pieces of DLC which give you powerful in-game benefits, but aren’t strictly necessary. We would guess that they made this edition in preparation for the sequel. We hope to see something about that game soon.
A Divisive Game
Right now reviews are quite mixed on Steam and other platforms. There is a solid reason why; fans of the original are upset that this is not a sequel. Instead it’s a remake, and a good one, but a remake nonetheless.
We still love the game but the desire for a big sequel has been driving some negative sentiment. So what do we say about that? It’s fine; you should never just worship a game and ignore other viewpoints. We did enjoy this game nonetheless, as you’ll see below.
Positives:
- Reworked graphics make it look like an entirely new game
- Additional vehicles and items improve basic gameplay
- Accessibility improvements on your bases and general UI really improve the flow of the game
- New characters and content spice up Breakdown, which was the best mode to begin with
Negatives:
- This is mostly the same game as the original
- Additional parts of the world map would have been useful
4/5 Great: The remake improves nearly every aspect of the game and makes it a fresh experience. For many the only major gripe is that this is not State of Decay 2 which we’re all avidly anticipating.
