Writing this review on RAGE is quite difficult for me. Why is that? Oh yes, because I love this game but its technical problems leave me feeling very frustrated.
When you start RAGE, those expecting an open world and non-linear gameplay should move on because it is not here. For those expecting great graphics, they are here. The effects look amazing and I often walked around asking myself “why does the post-apocalypse era look so beautiful?”
The shooting, engineering and racing are all very well streamlined. I didn’t ever go into a section and start wishing that it would be over. The game rewards you constantly in small ways for nearly everything you do. The feeling is similar to other games such as the “Metroidvania” (games like Shadow complex, new Castlevania games) style of game.

The shooting is extremely polished, as you would expect from ID. All of the weapons feel great to use and are quite accurate. I always felt capable of handling whatever situation came my way. Even the driving segments are fun, the car combat didn’t feel unnatural or boring at all.
What is even more amusing as that most of the NPC’s are copacetic to nice. Very few of them could possibly cause you any rage, villains excluded. Overall the game is a rather relaxing experience for veterans, and a good starting point for new players.
ID also included a great variety of references to its previous games, including Quake. You can check out several hidden areas, and there are even Fallout references since it was published by Bethesda.
Unfortunately, we can’t do a review without informing you of the issues. For Nvidia users, this game has been problematic for a few. You should make sure your game is updated with the latest Nvidia drivers.
Unfortunately, the game is a significant problem for ATI users. Our ATI rig, which greatly exceeds the requirements, still has graphical issues and crashes after cleaning up all drivers and re-installing. We also got all the optimization and installed the RAGE performance patch. It still has problems.
Updated: After the latest patch and update, we stopped experiencing the crashes and most problems with graphics.
Verdict: 4/5- RAGE is an amazing game that has game of the year potential. Everything from the shooting to the racing is extremely polished. The game just feels fun constantly, and there is always something to do. However the plethora of problems on the PC version of the game keep it from being perfect.
