Notch’s game Prelude of the Chambered review

Notch’s Game, Prelude of the Chambered, is a FPS in the style of Castle Wolfenstein.

Notch’s game was created in 48 hours for the Ludum Dare competition. He did it on stream just for his viewers. So how is this game? It isn’t unbelievably amazing, as you might expect from a game made in such a short period. It is however, very good for your average Java game.

You start out in a cell, with no idea how you got there. Players once again may remember this from Wolfenstein. It also shares doors that look similar, steel bars and a basic gameplay premise. You have to travel through each area finding keys, items and treasures.

As with any good FPS, you start out with few abilities and gain more as time goes on. You cannot even attack when you first start this game, you have to find the Power Glove which is located in the lower dungeons. With that you can not only attack, but you can bat around the various rocks found in the dungeons.

To switch up the variety, there are also ice areas which you need skates for. Later on you get cutters to break the bars which are holding you back from certain areas. There are quite a few items to find which helps switch up the gameplay, easily making it one of the better games during this competition.

Overall the game is very competently done, although none of it is particularly new or mind blowing. You might be amused by some of the enemies which look like creepers and fire projectiles at you.

For those interested in seeing more on this game, you can actually just go play it here. It is open source so people are already excited to make mods for it. Who knows where this tiny game will go in the future?

I watched him do this on the livestream…amazing seeing how this was put together so quickly yet functional. Made it look as easy as making a sandwich.

Yeah it was pretty impressive. So much for people saying Notch never codes.

This was the first game I played from the competition, its got a fair bit of content considering it was made in such a short time.
