Miss Monochrome is about an android that dreams of being an idol. She starts out with a lot of money, but gives it to a girl to be her manager. After becoming poor she runs into a convenience store manager and asks him to give her work. The manager gets her a lot of work where she can just stand still or do things that are easily understood by an android. The times he does not she usually angers the producer by getting it wrong. In the end someone notices Miss Monochrome’s hard work and gives her a chance to do something a normal idol would do.
It is a little sad that Miss Monochrome is obsessed with becoming an idol. It is shown time and again throughout the show that she is not really cut out to be an idol because she is an android. Instead when she is trying to grab the spotlight but she does really well at other things, accidentally becoming the best in the world at them. If she just wanted something else she probably could have easily achieved it, but her drive and passion make her charming.
The backstory to why Miss Monochrome wants to be an idol and had a mansion was interesting. Considering how little Miss Monochrome understood of the world it did not make sense why she had all that stuff. Also the obsession with becoming an idol seemed to be out of nowhere. The backstory brought it all together nicely even if it is farfetched. Makes me want to see more to find out if the two ever remember each other.
Miss Monochrome has a surprising amount of cameos from Wooser from Wooser’s Hand-to-Mouth Life. He appears in most of the episodes at some point. He even interacts with Miss Monochrome helping her out at times. Since Wooser is getting a new season next year this is a pretty cool way to remind people of his character.
Overall as a short show it is easy for shows like this to become old quickly, since so many use the same gags over and over. Miss Monochrome was trying to achieve one goal the whole time, but went about it in so many ways it stayed pretty interesting. Also her character’s passion made her so easy to like that I wanted to see her succeed and achieve her dream.
Score: 4/5 For a series of shorts it did quite well mixing it up and making it interesting.
