Megaman - Capcom's strange policies - Blue Bombed- Nerd Age

Street Fighter X Megaman is a new, free nod to Megaman. They seem to be acutely aware that fans do not want him to go away. At the same time, they also realize there isn’t as much demand as there used to be. In this article we will be exploring Capcom’s policy on Megaman and where they may go from here.

Megaman X Over and fan outcry

The whole thing started with Megaman X Over. This game was meant to be the final adventure of Megaman. However the fan outcry was tremendous. We were upset to see the series leave as well. We also found an iOS game to be an unfitting end for the “Blue Bomber.”

The game and trailer appear to be a nod to fans. The game will be a free platformer for PC. Overall this is a nice touch. It does show that Capcom has heard the fan demand. It is good to see that they are listening and we are excited to play the game in a bit.

What must Capcom learn from this?

Megaman games have not sold well since Megaman Soccer. The fan base just isn’t really there for him. However at the same time they need to keep this segment of fans happy.

The thing is, even if Megaman is out of style, these same fans are also hardcore Capcom fans. Or at least they are until he gets thrown away. Capcom has to see the big picture. I’m a fan of Megaman, but I also buy games from all of their franchises. Fans like this keep their sales high across multiple games.

When you get this big, you have to keep an eye on all your properties. The death of one franchise may mean the death of fans for others. As a big company more is expected of them. It’s only natural for fans to turn on you when any franchise is lacking.

Capcom at a Crossroads

They can either continue the series or drop it once again when demand falters. Weak attempts at new games will only insure that this cycle repeats forever. Let us all hope that Capcom makes a strong decision on the franchise soon.
