Ludum Dare is the talk of the Indie Gaming scene. We are going to give you a little background on this exciting group.
Ludum Dare has been around since ancient times, where they used to develop games in order to stave off frostbite. Some of your ancestors may have only survived due to this. You can learn more about its early history here:
Okay well maybe, that’s not right. Let’s try that again, Ludum Dare was founded by Geoff Howland and started its first competition in April of 2002. They now have regular events from the white-knuckle “compo” which has you create a game in 48 hours, to the relaxed Jam. As we reported earlier, Notch recently competed in this with his entry Prelude of the Chambered.
But why should you care about this competition? Are you always complaining you have no money for games? Well for one, these games are free. It will cost you zip, zilch. Many of the entries, especially in the Jam section, are as good as some commercially released games.
Two, this is an amazing outlet for independent developers to showcase their skills. Who knows how many great game makers slip through the cracks every day? Not quite so many anymore, thanks to this site.
There are currently quite a few contributors who keep the site running, including Mike Kasprzak who we hope to have an interview with soon. All of the staffers have some background in videogames, and several, like Mike, are independent producers. If you have time, you should stop by Mike’s site Skyhronics.
We would also be rude to not mention the other staffers, Phil Hassey of Galcon, Mike Hommel of Hamumu Clubhouse, and Seth Robinson of Robinson Technologies. So it’s a great place for you to network as well, if you are in the industry. We will be sure to have more coverage of this site in the future.
