Kyoukai no Kanata Review

Kyoukai no Kanata is about a girl with cursed blood named Mirai and an immortal half-youmu named Akihito. Mirai and Akihito meet when Akihito believes Mirai is going to jump off the roof and tries to save her. Mirai stabs him with a sword made of her blood and Akihito does not die. After that Mirai comes around and stabs him everyday, for what she says is practice. Eventually the two grow closer after they defeat the Hollow Shadow youmu. In the end Mirai has to decide whether to kill Akihito to save the world or sacrifice herself.

Kyoukai no Kanata for most of the story did very well and kept me extremely interested. Then right at the end they bring back Mirai with no explanation. It is even like Akihito was waiting for her to show up. He automatically goes straight to the roof, and acts like it is no big deal. The show should have ended with Mirai having sacrificed herself for love. It is a much stronger ending than magical return for no reason. I guess they just couldn’t resist having a sequel.

Kyoukai no Kanata youmu

The relationships in Kyoukai no Kanata are pretty messed up. Both the main girls act tsundere most of the time. The guys act perverted and do not show a lot of interest in the girls outside of their fetishes. Akihito puts down how he acts towards Mirai for the majority of the show down to loving girls with glasses. Even when the group goes into Akihito’s room they just find glasses and a note saying he would buy her glasses for her birthday. Do not know why she seemed touched by that. Then after the dysfunctional relationship the whole time comes major sacrifices which seem pretty out of place.

Kyoukai no Kanata fantasy

Overall despite its flaws Kyoukai no Kanata is an entertaining show. There is very little down time to get bored, which is not something I usually see in shows from Kyoto Animation. If it weren’t for the end of the show being a mess this show might have been a 5 for me.

Kyoukai no Kanata Mirai

Score: 4/5
