Grotesque Tactics II: Dungeons and Donuts a new comedy RPG has just come out.
In Grotesque Tactics II you play as Drake and you have Hero’s Amnesia. People all around you know you, while you may not remember then. This game comes in after the last one where the heroes were celebrating and a dangerous fog leaked in and killed people. All the survivors are hiding out in underground. They have formed guilds that serve their own purposes. Drake is helping to save Glory and forming his own guild with that purpose in mind.
The art for the backgrounds in this game is quite good. It is easy to tell that a lot of effort went into little details which can really make a area beautiful. Especially in the areas where Drake’s party fights monsters.
The fighting in Grotesque Tactics II has easy to use controls. Each character has a small skill tree to put points into. There are various difficulties and choices of quests to pick up. I really enjoyed being able to pick which path I wanted to go down. I like games that aren’t totally linear.
This game has an interesting emphasis on food. I guess that can be expected with donuts in the name and it gives the game a certain charm. It is hard to believe all the things people will do in this game for one piece of food or the quests you will go on just for a recipe. It puts emphasis on how the society has fallen, really.
Finally on to the comedy, this game is pretty funny. There is quite a bit of emphasis on more adult humor. I have no problem with that, but it might offend some people and it is probably not for younger audiences. A lot of the quests and items have joke names or puns. It is interesting to see what they will inject humor into next.
Overall the game as a whole is fun to play, which is the most important thing. I had trouble putting the game aside to do holiday activities which is not always the case.
Score: 4/5
