Funk of Titans blends a great art style with some of the least impressive gameplay we’ve seen in years.
Funk of Titans and Parody Cameos
Famous stars of music make cameos from Samuel L. Jackson (maybe Laurence Fishburn?) to Aretha Franklin. They just, kind of show up and talk to you briefly for the most part other than Zeus who gives you heroic challenges.
Derivative Gameplay in Funk of Titans
Funk of Titans is divided into two types of gameplay: “Runner” platforming and Quick Time Events. Bosses and sub-bosses are done with Quick Time while normal levels have you run through them. Unfortunately every single one of these aspects was more enjoyable in other games.
Excellent Art in Funk of Titans
By far the strongest part of this game is the art style. Many of the backgrounds, characters and items are all designed very well. We can’t understate how great the game looks. Silhouette effects, amazing water in the backgrounds and much more make the game look great.

Unfortunately not all of the character designs are beautiful. This one appears to be a joke on some of Lady Gaga’s costumes.
Of course the problem with that is having phenomenal art can’t carry a platformer these days. Hundreds of games like this have great art as well. Then you have some of the character designs which are truly awful offsetting the sheer beauty of the game.
Funk of Titans and the Store System
There are unlockable items which you can buy using the vinyl records but they mostly just add small portions of the level you could not get into before. Due to this the upgrades feel hollow and empty since they could have just let you see the full stage to begin with.
The developers could have added real upgrades to jumping, attack, etc. It’s like they just don’t understand what makes a game good.
Elevator Funk of Titans
What could have made the game infinitely better was authentic music from some of the celebrities the game parodies. Instead we have some elevator music in every stage that is vaguely reminiscent of funk, pop, etc.

Some of the swinging platforms also have collision issues. If you land anywhere near one you’ll immediately grab it even if you wanted to grab the wall.
As such each stage has a mediocre feel to it. Such a small part of the game has a huge impact on the overall atmosphere.
Final Verdict 2/5: Below Average – Mediocre is the name of the game here. A mediocre platformer, below-average music and underwhelming quick-time events come together. Every mechanic is taken from a game that did it better previously. Only the fact that it runs well and has some nice art saves Funk of Titans from being completely terrible. We had no pauses or crashes during gameplay. But literally everything the game does has been done before, and better, by another platform-based game. Unless you want to see some pretty pictures and parodies of movie/music stars you should skip this one.
