Dungeon Defenders is yet another entry in the huge number of Tower Defense games out now. So what exactly sets it apart? Multiplayer and a Diablo 2 feel to the game.
We’ve seen all of this before. A great variety of towers, with unique towers to each hero. Loot being dropped constantly, finding new items to use and upgrade. Smooth multiplayer and even a pet system. But there is something about how it all blends together in this game that makes Dungeon Defenders nothing less than charming. Trendy Entertainment has really done an amazing job blending the elements.
You start out at level 0 and take your first level up, allowing you to put a point into various stats such as speed. You can also level up your towers in a variety of ways, which lends quite a bit of customization to each character. At later levels you get powerful abilities like the Squire’s circular slash or the Monk’s tower boost.
As with Diablo 2, the melee and ranged combat are pretty basic. You can do a melee attack or a ranged and that’s about it. However, some characters can block or use other physical special attacks. This is pretty normal for the genre, and we haven’t really seen anyone, so far, do much more. The real fun comes form combining your own traps, and combining those traps with your allies.
The fact that each class has unique towers allows you to make huge combos. For example, you can have a Knight and Monk together. The Monk can actually stack his own towers on top of each other so that enemies walk though a tower that slows, shocks and enrages them. They can also be held there by a spiked barrier controlled by the squire, as some other towers shoot at them from afar.
The game has some excellent co-op action, a variety of pets and items and some very fun tower mechanics. There are even several interesting and tough boss monsters you have to take out. So what exactly keeps it from being perfect? It doesn’t particularly do anything not seen in another Tower Defense or Hack and Slash RPG. So what is the bottom line?
