Tsuritama has received so much praise about the characters, the way they made an old concept new, and many other things. I think much of that praise is undeserved.
Tsuritama did very well with the characterization of a couple characters of the cast, but there are four of them. Akira and Yuki are both mysteries for most of the series. Yuki is one of the main characters and we do not learn about him until late in the series. Even then we mostly just know his mission. About him personally we only really know about his relationship with Haru. About Akira we know even less, but that he is part of a mysterious organization. Later in the series when his organization turns against him, I felt nothing about it because no part of the series made me like him or get to know him. He mostly hung out with the group to spy on them, so he felt like a traitor. I would not even bring all this up, but I keep reading about all this godly characterization in the series. In the end they have only really given much depth to two of the characters involved in this show. The other two are men on missions who are mostly mysterious.
Even if Tsuritama had the best characterization on the planet it does not matter if it is not interesting. After the very beginning the only thing going on is fishing. There are breaks for family drama, but the majority is fishing. This makes the show pretty boring to people who are not interested in fishing. I mean how exciting is learning to cast. The only reason I managed to stick it out through the whole show was the hints that something exciting would happen later. The exciting part comes together at the end in a rush like many slice of life series, but it should have started sooner.
The family drama didn’t make things any better or add to the story in any meaningful way. It made me wish they were focusing on the fishing again. Never heard a good enough explanation why Natsuki was being so stubborn when he was obviously hurting the sister he really loved. All Natsuki’s problems seemed pretty petty and superficial for someone his age.
This is not all because I hate the show or anything. I am enjoying it quite a bit now that it is out of the fishing drama slump, but this show is far from the perfection everyone is painting it to be. Also there are other shows that come off stronger this season in the very things that people are applauding this show for.
