Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains

A truly great story needs a truly great villain. Anime and Manga have had many such great stories. However many stories fall short because they have strong heroes but no strong villains. We want appreciate some of the villains who make the series great or even steal the show. Now we won’t be going with the obvious ones such as Frieza or Dio. Everyone knows just who they are and what they brought.

No, we will go over the more obscure ones that the average fan doesn’t think about. The ones you are less likely to see in any anime merchandise products. Of course, you could get a custom Dakimakura Pillow with any favorite character, be it a hero, or a villain. Anyway, this article is about the underappreciated ones, the villains! We have to warn you though, this list will have some spoilers if you have not:

  • Read Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
  • Watched Kenshin
  • Read Medaka Box
  • Watched Madoka
  • Watched Sunred

Other than these Manga, you can also check out a few more that are known worldwide and have mind-blowing stories. You could explore Rengoku no Ashe, One Piece, Death Note, Demon Slayer, Vagabond, etc., to live adventures through graphics and unique storytelling.

So we will obviously be kicking this list off at #5

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains #5 Kyubey from Puella Magi Madoka Magica

This particular villain is perhaps more troublesome because you do not know for sure if they are one. Throughout the series, the small creature Kyubey is very strange. However, you cannot know anything is wrong for sure until it gets killed.

A replacement body comes and eats the former body. This is one of the creepiest moments of the series. However the more disturbing part is when you find out that the Kyubey is basically harvesting the souls of girls. He is doing it for what he claims is a good reason, to save the universe, but you are left no less unsettled.

Why is he #5? Because he gathered a bunch of young girls up and forced them to compete in a bloodsport with demons. The prizes were their very souls. He is so low on the list because he takes such a detached hand in his plan, and has little to lose.

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains #4 Misogi Kumagawa from Medaka Box

This charming young boy loves to put giant screws into people, then remove them as if nothing happened. He does everything to show the main character that she shouldn’t be so proud of being unequal. Killing friends, killing himself, none of that matters as long as those who believe themselves to be better than minuses learn the error of their ways. He also has the power to back it up, with an ability that can alter the fabric of reality himself.

But what really puts him up there is his eccentric personality. He is a strange kid and you never know what he’ll do next. He is not higher up on the list because he goes on to become a good guy and an infinitely weaker character. However, he is still quite likeable even as a hero.

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains #3 Shishio Makoto from Rurouni Kenshin

Shishio Makoto would normally be considered to be too popular of a character for this list. He would be a rather unremarkable character if not for one quality. He was in incredible leader who actually loved his group.

This is perhaps best shown when Komagata Yumi sacrifices herself to aid in his fight. Kenshiro tries to pain him as a monster, but he’s just told to shut up. Even the main character does not understand the incredible bond they have.

On top of that, he is incredibly powerful, and basically smashes everyone in his way. At one point he beats an entire group of main characters before Kenshin finally defeats him.

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains Vamp Sama

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains #2 Vamp Sama from Tentai Senshi Sunred

This particular guy is kind-hearted, hard-working and had the heart of a champion. He impresses people everywhere he goes and they love him. He is a great friend and a great man who only wants the best for almost everyone. Vamp is also completely dedicated to killing Sunred and taking over the world, grinding it beneath his heel.

Not only are Vamp and his cronies quite powerful, they are decent people. Even though some of them aren’t people. They just aren’t as strong as Sunred. But why is he #4? There isn’t really anyone like him, and the story would be infinitely worse without him. He is the perfect parallel to the violent and angry Sunred. In fact, this show would not be worth watching without them.

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains Yoshikage Kira

Top 5 Underrated Anime and Manga Villains #1 Yoshikage Kira from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure 4

Yoshikage Kira deserves the top spot for many reasons. For one, he is incredibly creepy in his scenes where he is posing as someone else. Second, he is evil to the core as a deranged serial killer. Third and most importantly he has to struggle for his power.

Throughout the majority of the series, Yoshikage Kira is at risk of being revealed, on the run or both. He gets screwed nearly as much as the protagonist, and is always in some form of trouble. Up to the very end he is moments away from being killed horribly.

But all of this struggle makes him one of the most powerful villains ever, not just in Jojo’s. He gets to have 3 stands in one, because his base stand develops other powers. These include remote bombs, and a limited ability to alter time. He is without a doubt more powerful than Dio.

This should be obvious, as Kira has to fight way more enemies than Dio ever did at once and still pulls through. At many points his own men turn against him because Josuke doesn’t kill them. On top of all that, Jotaro himself comes to foil his plans with everyone else! A villain can’t catch a break. He still almost defeats all of them, including Jotaro.

For all of these reasons, Yoshikage Kira is the #1 underrated Manga villain of all time.
