The King of Fighters XIII review- Who's the Boss?- Nerd Age
23
The King of Fighters XIII has been released recently. As usual SNK playmore is putting forward their usual lackluster effort in the series.
The King of Fighters XIII has been released. It has a classic graphical style and similar gameplay to the old games. You can do some truly extravagant combos and cancels. It is also nice to see Billy Kane come back.
For hardcore fans who will play pretty much any fighter this game is fine. You’ll get your combos and your old favorites. But it really feels like one step forward two steps back for an already languishing series.
Unfortunately The King of Fighters XIII is a mixed bag. While it does shake up the combo system and art it doesn’t do much else. The same fighters are here as usual.
What is even worse, is that the series basically doesn’t care about the tradition of having great bosses. Saiki is alright but not great. Darked Ash basically equates to a powered up reskin. Back in the day being a King of Fighters boss used to actually mean something.
On top of that the game is missing some essential characters such as Yamazaki. Many of the fan favorites in this game just didn’t make it in. There is also no promise of DLC for some of our favorite characters. The current DLC is quite overpriced at $4.99 USD. And it’s just a slightly different version of Iori. How exciting.
Bottom Line: 2/5 You’ll only be seeing good scores on this from people who have to keep a good relationship with Playmore. Pass on King of Fighters XIII until they decide to get back to tradition. A variety of missing characters and a reskinned final boss is beneath SNK. It’s a half-hearted attempt at a game. It just goes to show that they don’t really care about the series anymore.
