StarDrive is almost ready to be released. Those who pre-order the Beta on Steam can play right now. But forget about all of that for a bit. You probably want to know if this game is something you want. Let us explore that question right now. Before we start though, we must point out these shots are from the beta. They will likely look very different in the final edition.
What is StarDrive?
StarDrive is a 4x strategy space simulation. We have seen several games of this type ever since the advent of “Sins” and other games. One major feature of Star Drive is that you can take direct control of a ship during battle. Other than that it has the various races, technologies and ship designs you would expect. Here are a few other things that set it apart:
- Orbital troop deployment to take out ground forces
- A fleet manager to make designing your armada easily
- Random events
- Ways to steal enemy technology or incite rebellions
Is StarDrive for you?
If you absolutely love games like this, then yes. It has a very competently set up system. It adds enough to the genre that any fan of this style of game will definitely regret missing it. While it is a worthy title, it does not revolutionize the industry, so keep your expectations realistic. If this type of game is not your cup of tea, so to speak, this game probably won’t turn you over.

The “heart” of StarDrive is the ship design. They boast that they have more in-depth ship design options than any similar game. So for those who really love customization, this is for you.

Grids are the system of choice for customization in StarDrive. Ships and planets have easy-snap grids for you to put improvements on. We like the system so far. Grids have, through the ages of gaming, proven to be a reliable way to customize things. It is no different here.
