Sacred Tears TRUE Review

RPG Maker games of low quality have become so common on Steam that people confuse decent titles with them. Sacred Tears TRUE is a full JRPG which has little to do with the large number of low-quality titles we have seen recently.

Sacred Tears TRUE and the Refined JRPG

For those looking for excellent gameplay this title has everything that made previous titles great:

  • Card-based battles allow you to bluff and evade while waiting for the final strike
  • Stats follow a point system which lets you change powers on the fly
  • Areas are filled with the item pick-ups and chests you have come to love
  • Excellent music underscores a classical fantasy setting

If you are a fan of the retro RPG genre then this has everything you are looking for.

The Story of Sacred Tears TRUE

The game focuses on Seil and Seana, two childhood friends who have formed an investigation agency. By day they do odd jobs and by night they work as thieves attempting to make a name for themselves.

Somehow they manage to avoid notice for their larcenous activities with the exception of a few authority figures who learn what is happening. Over the course of the story they meet some very powerful people who leave them in a dangerous position.

From Average to Impressive

Early on in the game not much stands out about Sacred Tears TRUE. It is only after around 10 or so episodes that you get to the real meat of the game. Once you do you’ll find a handy crafting system and diverse combat options.

The Drawbacks of Sacred Tears TRUE

While everything has been meticulously crafted to a high standard there are some small oversights such as a lack of pictures for many NPC characters. It would stand out less if the overall package was not so well-crafted.

Innovation is also lacking in the game as while everything is well done, nothing is particularly innovative about it. We’ve seen the same high quality in games such as Wild Arms 1 and FF6 done in nearly the same way.

Oh my.

A Lighter Sort of Game

When I first started playing the game I just didn’t get what was going on. However as time went along I finally understood, it’s a comedy RPG. Most of the events have a comical twist to them and some of the art is indeed quite amusing.

Dramatic Encounter in Sacred Tears TRUE

There are some dramatic moments to break the comedy, but they fit well.

You should not expect world-shattering tragedy all the time from this game and that is totally fine. There are some dramatic moments but it is mostly a game about getting you to like the characters and enjoy their daily lives.

The Final Score: 4/5 Very Good

For those looking for a quality RPG in the modern era this is it. Just do not come in expecting it to redefine the genre because it does not. While it loses some points for a lack of innovation the gameplay is so good, and the product is so polished, that you can tell a lot of dedicated effort went into it.

You can get the game on Steam right now for $9.99.
