Ribbon-chan : The TV also known as Maji de Otaku na English! Ribbon-chan: Eigo de Tatakau Mahou Shoujo – The TV is the sequel to a show with almost exactly the same name that came out last year. Ribbon-chan is still trying to teach the masses English with some of the weirdest phrases ever. Not very useful, but what they try to teach can be funny at times. I also find it funny that the newer series has almost as many translated episodes as the previous series that came out a year ago.
In the original Ribbon-chan series the show was pretty much bankrupt. In this new show the producers appear to have finally gotten a bit of money. A lot of the story is about how to make the show attract more viewers and expand their influence outside just the show. For instance they talk about the girls doing voices for GPS systems and who will get the first dakimakura. The producers have a much bigger part in this series and they give the different producers some personality. That is interesting since they do not even give the producers a real face. Usually when a group of people in anime do not have faces they do not have distinct personalities either.
At the beginning of the first episode they show the opening for the actual show that the magical girls are in. I thought that was the new route they were taking with this show and then it was just a trick. I am glad it is sticking with the behind the scenes theme, but it would be nice to see their actual show every now and then. Everything that is going on is about a cast of magical girls from a show that we don’t get to see.
Going to end this with my favorite English phrase that Ribbon-chan teaches in these five episodes.
Truly a phrase that gets used all the time. This show still does not know how to teach English, but it is getting a bit better than before. Usually I could fill a whole post with just ranting about the horrible “English” sentences they created to teach with.
