Quite some time ago Own3d was the favorite streaming site of many gamers. They died, leaving a void that other sites are trying to fill. Pwnit is one of these sites that is jockeying for position in the gaming market. However instead of being straight streaming they’re trying to have people put up the most impressive clips for prizes. Will this catch on? It’s worth a look at least.
Winning Gaming Prizes on Pwnit
The point of the site is to foster interaction between gamers by having them upload their best videos and vote on them. They are using what they call a “ladder” system for this. It’s sort of a hyper popularity contest where people using the the program give you more points for your votes.
This combination will likely lead to some massive growth later on as tactics like this have worked for others. The prizes so far are quite good such as:
- $100 for anything you want on Steam
- 15,000 RP for League of legends
- Controllers and other peripherals
We are a little concerned that this system is going to lead to a community of core people patting each other on the back and rigging the votes towards very specific people they like. A YouTube group could come in and just dominate the categories. It seems a bit insular, don’t you think?
Game Commercial or Site?
For better or worse a big part of this site is just advertising brands such as Logitech and games such as Minecraft. It’s an incredibly commercial site, in fact that seems to be the main point. As long as everyone goes in knowing that then we suppose there is no real harm there.
Will Pwnit be a Big Name in the Future?
We would argue so. Concerns about the inner community aside, people love competitions where you can win things. We expect them to grow from what is basically a nonentity to something really huge. You be the judge though. Check out their site and decide whether you feel the same way about it as we do.
