PlanetSide 2 Goes Live

PlanetSide 2 has gone live for a bit now. We wanted to go over a few facets of the game.

PlanetSide 2 has gone free-to-play

You can get it on Steam right now. As anyone who has been following our coverage knows, you can play as three distinct groups with different statistics. It also has the standard group and market systems you would expect. Overall it delivers and excellent package for the free-to-play market and is easily one of the best games there.

The appeal of PlanetSide 2

Unlike the last one this game is a bit of a different animal. Instead of the sheer open-world mechanics, you have a large map in instances. We would say this is not particularly better or worse than one. It is just different, and good in its own way.

Tactics in PlanetSide 2

To succeed you need good organization and communication. You can just zerg rush with a ton of people, but only if the opposing PlanetSide 2 team is equally disorganized. Do not count on winning through sheer numbers unless you can also assume your opponent is stupid.

PlanetSide 2 is not just a massacre

Objectives are more important than kills. As a result this is a different flavor from many free-to-play FPS games. We’d even go so far to say as it’s very different from playing TF2 on a public server.

Optimization issues and PlanetSide 2

As the top comments at the time of this writing attest, optimization is an issue. While we did not experience any issues personally, we do not have normal computers. We know of several people who have complained about a few issues. This is important to bring up. The engine still needs some optimization for lower-level rigs. This is a fairly important thing for free-to-play games. However we are confident that the PlanetSide 2 team will work on this.
