Planetary Annihilation – The Rebirth of Total Annihilation

A new game promises to revitalize the RTS industry. This one has a decidedly cartoon-inspired art style similar to the RTS mode of Spore. Unlike Spore, it does not look like Planetary Annihilation will be a big disappointment. It also comes from an experienced team. From Total Annihilation to Morrowind they are seasoned veterans.

Planetary Annihilation Multi Planet Warfare

Planetary Annihilation -not by Peter Molyneux

You will in fact be able to blow up planets as they promise. Inter-planetary conflict is also promised.Fights will happen on both the planet and in orbiting areas. This method of fighting has incredible potential for strategy.

Just imagine getting hammered on the ground. Then you call in support from the top. Bombarding the orbiting battlezones from the planet could also be in the cards.

Planetary Annihilation Battles

Planetary Annihilation has hard-hitting gameplay

One of the most important aspects of any RTS is whether the combat feels and looks good. Well the combat is already looking very impressive so far. If they stay true to their roots we can expect a huge number of units and massive explosions.

There also promises to be a special commander unit much like in other games the crew has done. Overall this looks like it is shaping up to have some amazing gameplay.

As far as the units they have already revealed many of them. Let us go down a few:

  • Ground units
  • Orbital units
  • Naval units for water planets
  • Rockets
  • Orbital transports

It looks like this game has some variety. However some of these units will only be in if they reach some of their stretch goals of over 1 million dollars.

Planetary Annihilation has flexible maps

Something that was always missing from Total Annhilation was map sharing. Sure, there were tons of sites but only those of us who were computer proficient had the really good ones together.

Some maps even made computers chug or freeze. We are here years later and this game will feature easy sharing of created maps.

Random maps are also a part of the formula, but fortunately you don’t have to play them. Call us old-school, but we always found that maps made with human attention were way better than any random map. Planetary Annihilation gives you both.
