Patchworld and the little buzzword that could

Normally we wouldn’t even cover a game such as Patchworld. Not because of anything to do with the game, but because we rarely cover mobile apps. But what is unique about this game is their advertising. They are marketing an old way to sell your game in a new way, and they are calling it “freemium”.

What in the world is a “freemium” model of sales?

They are releasing the first two levels of the game for free. You have to pay for the rest. The only thing that lets them call this “freemium” is marketing. But techniques such as these are important to look at as developers. Even if you are using a common technique, you can draw buyer attention by using buzzwords. In our opinion a their buzzword and press releases will draw attention to a game that otherwise might have fallen into obscurity.

Patchworld gameplay

Patchworld itself

As a mobile game, Patchworld is not deep or particularly stimulating. It basically has you completing simple outline puzzles. While the graphics are nicely done, they aren’t anything amazing. But a small game like this can make a company when marketing is properly applied. This is why mobile games are so popular in the current market.

Well it still looks fun

If you want to check it out for more than an object lesson, feel free. You can get it in the app store for around $1.99. You can also check out their website and find out about some of their other games. Eggball games does a lot of smile titles for mobile devices like this. We are actually seeing many small start-up companies do very well for themselves with this model. If things like this keep up, we may have to start covering mobile games. Please let us know if you, the fanbase, would like this.
