PlanetSide 2. Mechwarrior. Panzer General. Old games do not die they just go online (or have a Kickstarter). This game is the latest one to get an online incarnation and they are finally letting people in the closed beta.
Panzer General Online Goes Free-to-Play
The other thing we’re seeing with practically all these games is the free-to-play model. This particular one uses “Command Cards” in order to shake up the original formula. We imagine the final model will be some combination of selling these cards, maps, etc.
The Panzer General Online Gameplay
For the most part it seems the base gameplay has stayed the same. The cards however add a random element that completely changes the game up. The only concern for classic gamers is whether some of these cards will be hard to get. If some of the cards end up being devastating and difficult to get this could be very troublesome. You can at least trade them though.
This setup also goes to the units themselves. Fighting takes place between miniatures on the hexes and players have to collect them in order to create a stronger army. Gotta catch em’ all seems to be the new name of the game.
The Multiplayer Benefit
Of course the one thing that is going to be great is the multiplayer. The older games always had some things lacking in this area. You could do some things with it but instant and efficient gameplay between people on PC was somewhere between problematic and nonexistent depending on your mods and how close your friends were.
Getting the Panzer General Online Beta
If you are a fan of the classic series or might be interested in the new one then check out the Ubisoft game site. It is being put together by Blue Byte and published by Ubisoft. Blue Byte is known for their tabletop translations of “The Settlers” and ANNO. We hope this means they will keep it close to the classics that many of us grew up playing.
