Old consoles are getting new releases and seeing some excellent sales in some cases. With the release of NEO XYX we wanted to look at this trend and see if there is a market for developers in this area.
Old Consoles, NEO XYX and the Dreamcast
A new game is coming out for the Dreamcast that was on the NEO-GEO before. NEO XYX is being released on February 17th. It has a similar top-down style to many other Dreamcast and Neo-Geo shooters. It’s a shooter with multiple huge bosses and some very nice visuals. It comes on a new CD for the system as well. We wish them luck and think it will probably be a success.
New Games for Old Collectors
Old collectors love things like this. Not only is it a fresh game to play the small print runs of many of these insure that they will be collectors items. Therefore we would have to say there is a market for this if you can find a development kit and a way to set up the rom on a cart or disc. If you are running a new indie company this could be your first cash cow.
The Evidence of Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril
For those unfamiliar with it this game is a 2d platformer with some RPG mechanics. It’s still a popular game today for some streamers and perhaps as important it sold out very quickly after being released. It is to this day a really cool item and proof that there is a market for things like this.
The Other Advantage of Old Consoles
You often won’t be competing with big companies for the business since they don’t manufacture new ones themselves. Copyright is a concern but many others have had no trouble with it. So if you need a new idea to start your development career, this is it.
