No one can destroy the Joker: come learn why the Joker is immortal

A rather unlikely situation in the Batman Beyond movie.

You can’t kill the Joker, you just simply can’t. In this article we’ll discuss the evidence of his invulnerability and why this simple fact is so true.

This might as well happen every day to him.

Proof 1: Joker has been stabbed, shot and beaten half to death more times than anyone can count. He has been beaten half to death by almost every member of the bat family. Even more than that, he has been grievously injured by members of Batman’s rogue gallery.

This is a man who has survived being in Arkham for years upon years, surrounded by people who he has injured at one point or another. He is arguably the most hated man in Gotham and somehow survives anyway. This is very likely to be true even in crossover series that the DC Universe is filled with; James Tynion’s Joker War for example, could be a decent series to explore for some more of the Joker’s shenanigans (where he still doesn’t die, by the way).

This happens all the time really.

Proof 2: The Joker has survived both being beaten to “clinical” death by Nightwing, and being attacked by the Spectre. Both of these happened in the Joker’s Last Laugh. He has survived coma, brutal chest wounds (such as the one Hitman gave him) and being certifiably dead dozens of times. Yes it is comics, and that half explains it, but he has probably been full on dead more times than Batman. And that is an awful lot of times.

Proof 3: Joker has survived explosions he was right next to on multiple occasions. One notable explosion was when he was fighting with the Red Hood. He simply shot a canister of highly explosive gas that was right next to him. He has taken falls that would kill anyone else and simply disappeared.

By this point, it should be obvious to anyone that the Joker just cannot die. But why? There are many popular reasons. Being unable to die from the Specter’s substantial power suggests he has divine protection. People far out of his power level stumble when fighting him and never do manage to kill him.

This Batman is another piece of the puzzle.

Why is this? It is because the Joker plays a vital role in strengthening the universe. Now for an object lesson: Earth 51 Batman killed his Joker, and nearly all the other villains on his planet. As a result, villains seen providing aid from crisis to crisis (in nearly every major DC event, villains have to put aside their hatred and help save existence) were not alive to protect Earth 51. As another result of that the villain known as Monarch attacked an ill-prepared world. The base DC world would never have fallen prey to such a thing, having hardened villains and heroes from their perpetual war.

Ultraman is the great big jerk on the left.

You can see the reverse of this example from the Superman doppelganger Ultraman, he proves no match for Superman because he is a villain. He kills his hero opponents once, at their most basic level. Superman has to fight increasingly tougher foes and is stronger because of it.

Ultraman does however manage to kill the previously mentioned Earth 51 Batman for the exact same reason, the earth 51 Batman hadn’t had a difficult fight in so long that he couldn’t stand up to a superman level opponent. This would lend a staggering amount of evidence to the theory that in the DC universe, bad things have to happen so existence can continue.

Unfortunately, heroes in DC have to be baptized in a fountain of innocent blood. The sacrifice of innocents to villain is a necessity in the DC universe so that reality can survive. It’s just how the story has been set up. Will we ever see this trend change? Who knows, but if recent Teen Titans is any indication, probably not.
