Surprise, there was no Nintendo E3 2014 Conference. Instead we got a digital event with terrible Robot Chicken characters and a somewhat amusing Smash Bros Invitational.
Amiibo and the Nintendo E3 2014 Conference
One big reveal was the fact that they are basically going to be adding “Skylanders” characters to Nintendo games. Big games like Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart will have additional figures to buy. These figures will track stats and give you an advantage in games. They also have some vague deal with Disney and the makers of Skylanders.
The Smash Bros Invitational Highlight of the Nintendo E3 2014 Conference
The tournament itself was quite fun with a lot of highlights and good matches. It also had one of the funniest parts of this entire event. The part where Megaman got his final smash and an announcer started yelling about the “Super Fighting Robot Megaman”.
The Nintendo E3 2014 Conference Hyrule Warriors Announcement
One other big announcement was Hyrule Warriors. It is basically Dynasty Warriors but with Nintendo characters. Mostly ones from Zelda.
Other Assorted Nintendo E3 2014 Conference News
- Yoshi’s Epic Yarn was talked about a bit more and some interesting mechanics were revealed.
- Mario Maker lets you do just that, make your own Mario game.
- Splatoon lets you throw paint everywhere and use super powers while in it.
- Kirby gets a yarn-based game too. Man these guys really love yarn. Maybe they are secretly cats.
- Palutena joins the Smash Bros cast. I don’t know why but there she is.
- Xenoblade Chronicles looks pretty good.
While this was probably the most interesting conference out of the big companies I still can’t help but feel a bit underwhelmed. It seems like on some level console gaming has lost a spark. Which is odd when companies like Gamestop are doing better than ever.
