Nintendo is dropping the price of the 3DS in response to its poor reception.
Faced with horrendous earnings and ongoing weak demand, Nintendo has dramatically lowered the price of its 3DS hand held system just four months after the system hit store shelves. On top of that, people who bought one early will receive 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo shop.
These games will come from the virtual console lineup, which includes Yoshi’s Island, The Legend of Zelda and Mario Kart: Super Circuit. While we’re Nintendo fans here, it has objectively been a pretty bad year for Nintendo. Even the Wii has not been doing great lately, and reported its first ever quarterly loss of $328 million.
The new price for the 3DS is going to go down to $169. This is a much more affordable alternative to the $249 used previously. Part of this drop in price also comes from the fact that the Vita is coming up. Nintendo needs all of its sectors profitable if it is going to continue with this launch.
But the main problem with the 3ds isn’t particularly the price, it is the fact that it doesn’t offer a lot more than the DS. The 3d effect is nauseating to some gamers, myself included. I personally am saying this as a huge fan of Nintendo who would be dumbstruck if they were to fail. One of the great game developers, just gone on the wind like what Sega has become.
The only good thing about it is the fact that you can turn the 3D off. It just goes to show that you shouldn’t always make something 3D even if you cannot make it good. Unless Nintendo gets a stronger game lineup and marketing for the system, it will still fail. We can only hope they do more to fix this before then.
Well, some of these have potential.
