Nintendo and bad news are following each other these days. From poor sales to lawsuits they are having some serious trouble. We want to talk about a few reasons why they are not looking so good.
Nintendo and Bad News with the Wii U
Sales have been around 31 percent worse than expected. You can check out the sales figures here: Nintendo Site. The 3DS is doing better but at some points recently the PS Vita has knocked it out of near-top spots for game sales in Japan. This is a bad sign.
Lawsuits and Mixed News
Motiva LLC recently took Nintendo to court. They claimed that Nintendo had infringed on their patents among other claims. However the case was thrown out as not meeting the base requirements to pursue it. You are probably asking who the heck Motiva is, and so are we. They apparently believed they had some claim to the motion-capture technology Nintendo uses. The point however is that if a non-entity in the game industry believes they can sue Nintendo now, how long until others follow suit?
My Personal Take on the Nintendo and Bad News
In my opinion we are seeing shades of Sega here. What about a system with a peripheral that allows you to play separately? Dreamcast had that. Arguments with third parties and a lack of third party support for top-quality titles? Check again, both for Dreamcast and the Wii U. However the Dreamcast had far better third party games and it still failed. Are we noticing a lack of a core company that will live on no matter how much it loses? Check yet again. Microsoft and Sony may not be too big to fail but they are too big to ever let their systems die. Nintendo has no big brother like this.
Nostalgia Goggles, Nintendo and Bad News
I grew up with Nintendo so I may have nostalgia goggles on. However I would like to see them pull out of this rather significant nosedive here. I want them to recover and make some great games but as of now they are heading the way of Sega. That seems like a shame to me but facts are facts. Right now Nintendo and bad news are walking hand-in-hand. We and many others will be following the company very closely to see if they can turn around.
