While browsing through the events for the day something weird came up. MLG is teaming up with ESPN X to put on an exhibition. Unfortunately they aren’t exhibiting anything we’d be interested in but we thought it would be nice to talk about. It’s an indicator of how mainstream gaming has become.
The MLG X Games Invitational
The event itself will be taking place in Austin on June 6-8. Pros from X Games and Call of Duty: Ghosts players will be playing as well. So we officially have no reason to watch this here. There will also be other events we don’t want to watch including:
- Skateboarding
- BMX
- Moto X
- Rally
- Stadium SUPER Trucks
- Musical Acts
Basically a lot of things that non-nerdy people would be really excited about. This is probably why only the Call of Duty: Ghosts players have been invited. Because at this point COD has gotten to the point where it’s not for nerds.
MLG X Games Invitational and Gaming Culture
So why is it interesting to those who don’t want to have anything to do with it? Because we already have an aspect of gaming culture that is not for nerds. It’s for bros and normal people. It makes a ton of money and those who run the gaming scene are taking note.
So in short it’s showing us that there is now a subculture of a subculture. Maybe of two if you consider X Games fans to be underrepresented. Should you care about this split? That’s up to you to decide.
