Kakumeiki Valvrave Season 2 Episode 12
With all the hints that Kakumeiki Valvrave gave throughout the show that Haruto would not make it through the end it was not surprise that Haruto lost all his memories. This action that should have had the biggest impact out of the whole series was just expected. The show kept its track record of none of the deaths feeling very emotional. Most of the time it was because the characters were not well known. At other times there was just too much going on or too many other deaths to get too upset about a main character dying.
My biggest disappointment from this episode was the treatment of Saki. All along while she would try to push Haruto to care about her, she never did anything that would hurt him. She never showed any sign of wanting him to be hurt. Even during the infamous rape scene she was upset because she knew it was against his will. She did not accept his pity proposal afterwards either. So why now at the end of the series do they make her look like a bad person by saying she was happy he was losing his memories to make it easier for her to compete? It does not really fit with her character and there was no time for her to redeem herself from that. Now the last thing most people will remember about her was that Saki was happy about the thing that killed Haruto. It feels like the writers just wanted both love interests to look bad in the end.
The ending to Kakumeiki Valvrave Season 2 is very convenient. The revolution inside Dorassia and backstabbing by ARUS should have caused some disorder. That would possibly let the students get away, but how would those things stop the fighting within the Jioran group itself? They still never really solved it even when the others were revealed. Asking the pilots about the situation should not have appeased everyone. Also if the council was destroyed, why didn’t they come after the rest of the pilots? Not even going to touch on Shoko suddenly being ok with aliens. The ending would have been better with more time to reach this conclusion. The way it was presented is too handy and leaves too much open to interpretation.
Kakumeiki Valvrave Season 2 Review
Compared with Season 1 of Kakumeiki Valvrave Season 2 did not quite measure up. Season 1 was lighthearted despite the dark content of the series and did outrageous things at every turn. Season 2 was just grim dark and much more conservative compared to season 1 . It felt like it lost some of what made Kakumeiki Valvrave fun to watch. Not that it was ever boring. The show kept up the action throughout every episode which is probably what hurt the ending the most. The action kept up until the very last second and left very little time to wrap up all the loose ends the series had.
The very fact that there all still so many loose ends and no actual confirmation of Haruto’s death leaves me feeling that this is not the end of Kakumeiki Valvrave forver. Hopefully if they do bring it back it comes in back more like the first season.
Overall this season did not see as much growth of the characters as I would have hoped. They mostly stayed the way they were at the beginning. The character that did see the most growth in this season was L-elf. He went from his usual cocky self to depressed after his failure to bring back the princess. He came back from that with a new direction and ended the show revealing his true feelings of friendship for Haruto which he would never have done at the beginning of the show. L-elf ended the series as the character I most liked. While he was cutthroat he was always looking out for the good of others even if he would not express what he was after.
It felt like Kakumeiki Valvrave’s writers did not like the way that the first season was received and tried to be more serious in the second season. Unfortunately that craziness is what drew people to the show in the first place.
