Overview of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Episode 4

Jonathan meets up with Erina Pendleton in this episode while he recovers. Speedwagon continues to be cool. Most importantly, they meet Will Zeppeli. He has been hunting the stone mask and its masters for years. He helps Jonathan learn how to use the energy known as the “Ripple.” Many fans affectionately recall this as Hamon, so that is what I will be calling it as well. I am an affectionate fan after all. Meanwhile Dio gathers his army which includes the fearsome Jack the Ripper from history. The episode ends with a climactic battle in which Jonathan learns to use Hamon effectively.

The Pacing of Phantom Blood

One thing that I noticed even in the original anime was the pacing. Phantom Blood goes fairly slow in some parts. Even so it is by no means as slow as some other books even within this series. However it can be a little disconcerting for some people. You have episodes of relative calm and then a huge, crazy event happens. Episode five promises to be another really crazy episode like three. This pacing does not bother me, but I see how some people could be unnerved by it.

This Hand of Jojo’s is Burning Red

Hot blood and craziness are not things you see being lauded in anime lately. If someone is hotblooded lately they rarely scream on it. However this series takes us back to the days when being hotblooded was something to get excited about. When it meant something that you were a mountain of muscle with supernatural power. It is a nice change of pace.

No frogs were harmed in this display of being awesome.

The Verdict on this Episode of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Much like it was in the manga, this episode was mostly for training. It establishes how Jojo is able to fight. As a result it is perhaps not the best episode of the show. Even so it is still quite good.
