In “I Seem To Be A Rock”, you play as a rock that can teleport. No, we’re serious, that is the game. One of the members of Young Horses, the makers of Octodad and Octodad 2, is working on this strange game.
The developer of I Seem To Be A Rock, Kevin Zuhn, took some time during the Octodad 2 development to create this odd platformer that doesn’t use normal mechanics. In fact your character can’t even move on his own, he (it?) has to use his special abilities. You go through mazes on a journey of enlightenment.
In I Seem To Be A Rock you spend your time as a rock trying to find itself. On your journey you shoot your astral form to areas in the shape of a blue energy streak. You then teleport to that location. As you progress you have to make bouncing shots and trick shots. This combined with the fact that some levels require very fast timing makes the game quite a challenge. You can download the demo here.
For enterprising developers, this smaller game gives an interesting story. Kevin did a lot of work on I Seem To Be A Rock over time, but also had members of Young Horses help him with the project. This teaches us that a team can be a handy thing, and even help you create and promote personal products while you work on the team product.
Another thing you can learn from this is to not overstep your capabilities. Kevin mentioned that he had one version that used way too many resources, causing it to run poorly. It’s great to have a lot of big ideas, but they have to be implemented smoothly.
Also be sure to check out the Octodad site and Kevin’s blog. The Octodad blog almost always has something interesting, as they constantly post comics and stories. Speaking of that, Octodad 2 is going into early testing. We’ll be sure to bring you more information later on.
