Gauntlet and Remake Syndrome

Gauntlet is getting yet another remake. This time they’re trying to recreate the retro style with the same gameplay. While we have lots of good memories of the game it seems like a waste not to innovate things. We want to ponder with you what they might do to shake things up.

The Gauntlet Gameplay

The game was the original hack-and-slash. However today many other games from Diablo 3 to Torchlight 2 have taken its place. They’ve evolved gameplay and shaken things up. So why do they not do this with Gauntlet? The answer probably lies in the fear that older fans won’t enjoy it anymore.

This seems rather baseless as many of the older fans are playing competing games and enjoying them. The bigger fear perhaps lies in it being called a “Diablo Rip-off” even though Gauntlet came first.

Gauntlet as a Cash Cow

Another thing wrong with the series is the fact that it’s just seen as a money maker. No matter what you do with the game someone will buy it or play it. The fact that they don’t have to innovate as much is one big reason they do not.

Giving Gauntlet a Little Credit

That being said the gameplay has evolved a bit over the course of the years. Now we have things like more options with power ups and communal gold. It’s not that there are no upgrades or depth, it’s just that we think there could stand to be a lot more.

All of these add up to what we call “Remake Syndrome”. The older fans will buy the game anyway so you don’t need to innovate as much or sometimes, work as hard on it. It has been the curse of many sequels and remakes. In this case the series has been remade many times and will continue to be later on. It’s not something that is going to go away but is something we need to know about.

The Newest Gauntlet Release

One thing that won’t change is new releases with pre-order benefits. They’re handing out comic books and items to those who get it early. While we’re probably going to pass on this one you can take a look at the Steam Page if you’re still a fan.
