In America we have cons and other things that focus on gaming here and there. However we do not have festivals like GameCity. Today we want to look at what they are doing to preserve gaming and how other countries, perhaps even other ones within Europe, should do the same.
The GameCity Event
The event itself is hosted by Nottingham Trent University. It’s basically a massive event where people come together to explore videogaming. While some places have things like this they are rarely to this scale. You can meet other gamers, hang out and find out where the industry is going from there.
They have nightly events for gamers as well.
The event this year is going to have two massive screens. They might even have smaller screens around the venue for signage. If you’re someone who is setting up an exhibit or a booth, then you could advertise your games or projects using signage services similar to Looptv, along with sponsored ads related to the event. Those attending can check out featured games and events on these as they play other games. It’s a project of Nottingham Trent University so you can expect many students from there to attend.
The GameCity Antique Showcase
Attendees are being asked to bring in old consoles, games and peripherals for a showcase. Their equipment will be on display in the National Videogame Archive for people to see.
Britain’s Forward Thinking on Gaming
While the government of Britain takes a lot of flack for various programs they have been forward-thinking in one area: gaming. From methods of subsidizing creation to allowing festivals like this they promote gaming. This is something that many governments have fallen behind on. The future is gaming and it can’t be avoided.
Attending GameCity
The event will be held from October 19-26 so check out their site. It will be over a large area that goes through several venues and open public spaces. This allows people to make full use of Nottingham.
Of course for those of us who can’t attend we hope that some day our governments and universities host things to this level. The most we can get are “nerd frats” and gaming weekends on campuses that very few people attend. Not counting Gencon and such, those are completely different types of events.
