FMOD has now gone free for indie developers. We’re going to talk about what this means, where you can get it and why we may see more companies doing this. At any rate it’s nice to have another useful tool for indies.
What is FMOD?
Basically it’s a sound suite that allows you to record and edit audio for your game. It has a large variety of very powerful tools for developers. Game like Forza Motorsport 5 use it as well. It’s a fairly popular tool in the industry. Little Big Planet is another game that uses it.
So why is LBP up there? Because they took this software along with some lesser-known artists and had a really good soundtrack. Other developers could do the same.
Why is FMOD Going Free?
Because many of the small indies today are going to become the big companies of the future. Many of the big ones today started out in that way as well. At the same time it’s excellent publicity for their production suite. There are many reasons why this is a sound business decision.
Game Development Software in the Future
We will also probably see, you guessed it, more companies doing this in order to build a base of customers. While certainly it is not for everyone this could work for many mid-size companies who need to get an extra push to the top. It’s also software so they don’t have to deliver a physical copy. This saves them quite a bit of money.
