Suisei no Gargantia is about Ledo who pilots a mech called Chamber to fight against the Hideauze. As humans are retreating from a failed mission against the Hideauze Ledo gets separated from the group and sucked through the wormhole to a primitive planet. Ledo finds out that the planet is Earth that is now considered a fairy tale by his people. The people on Earth now live on ship because after the ice age all land has been submerged. They get materials by salvaging them from the bottom of the ocean. After consulting with Amy, Ledo tries to help the Gargantia against pirates, but may have only succeeded in making things worse.
The first episode of Suisei no Gargantia had all the problems of mech shows and very little of the good aspects. In the very beginning before the battle there is a standard humans need to keep a lesser lifeform from getting in their way speech before sending Ledo into action. Then there is a blur of beam weapons and alien attacks. It was so boring that it took me several tries to even get to the second half of the episode. It picked up a bit there, but not enough to make up for the first half. I gave it another chance and watched the second episode which turned out quite a bit better.
It is interesting that both groups in Suisei no Gargantia do not believe that the other group exists. The group on Earth has a better reason for it since they probably lost a lot between the ice age and the flooding. The information or people who knew about it might have been lost. The group in space is obviously advanced and should have had the means to keep a record of their home planet. Also they should have known they left people behind. The planet could obviously still support life then, so it was pretty naive to think everyone was gone for sure.
Suisei no Gargantia leaves a lot of questions open about the people on earth. The one that strikes me the most is how do they get all their clothing. There is no way they could fish all that out of the ocean. I guess there could be a chance they saved some animal that could provide fur to make clothing. A lot about how they went from a frozen mostly dead planet to a planet full of water and boats is left to the imagination. I hope they elaborate more later on.
Overall the show could go either way depending on where they go with this premise. Hopefully it will not predictably like I can already see it happening.
