Space Dandy which has been hyped for a long time has finally come out. Space Dandy travels through space trying to identify new aliens for profit and visit all the locations of Boobies, a breastaurant chain.
Space Dandy the character is shallow, perverted, self centered, and many other negative things. Because Space Dandy is not a very nice person, it is nice that they do not portray him as a hero. He is shown for what he is and gets into a lot of trouble, and most of it is his own fault. He has a large amount of luck, so things normally work out anyway like they will with the ending to the episode even though they should all be dead.
The Space Dandy show does not have a lot of story so far. It appears that Dandy will be randomly traveling through space looking for rare aliens and restaurants where waitresses show off their assets. Also there is a group trying to chase down Dandy because some how this shallow man is the key to the universe. This group does not look like they are going to be very successful from how things went in the first episode. If they do catch Dandy it will probably be way down the line when the writers suddenly decide to rush a story at the end like so many shows do.
Space Dandy is being released, dubbed and subbed around the same time. This has lead to a lot of comments about which is better. I watched both versions of episode one for comparison. With the dub I think they changed some of the lines to be funnier for American audiences. The lines still had the same intent, but were well localized. So for verbal jokes the dub wins for me. The sub on the other hand has a better opening and ending, since they did not use the original songs in the dub. The ending to the dub is mostly just scenes from the episode. Also I do like hearing the voices that were originally intended for the characters, especially for the robot character. Both versions have there place and it does not look like anyone will be missing out by watching one or the other.
Overall Space Dandy was a bit too hyped and many people will probably be disappointed with what this show really is like. It is not bad, but it so far it is a standard comedy with very little story line. Hopefully it will become better than that with time.
