Shin Sekai Yori starts with a scene where people die from someone’s psychic powers. Then we get to see Saki have her visit from the “spirit of adulthood.” Saki then goes through a ritual to get rid of earthly desires and starts a new school. The school is for training students with psychic powers and there are rumors that students have disappeared from the school.
So far the story for Shin Sekai Yori seems pretty cliche. Big brother watching and getting rid of you if you do not conform is pretty standard at this point. I hope that this show goes in a different direction now that they have established the environment that the characters are in. It they focus to much on the big brother thing this is going to be a pretty boring show. The opening part of the show gives the impression that things are not going to change for the worse. Someone is going to rebel and people will die.
The beginning of Shin Sekai Yori was so poorly done. A shaky camera and blurry pictures are never good. Considering the rest of the episode looked very good, I know it was just for effect, but when people are dying there is no need to distract from it with poor effects.
When I first saw the words “spirit of adulthood” in Shin Sekai Yori I thought it was a joke. From what I understand this is supposed to be in the future. So they should know what it is and not need cheesy names like that for it. I get that it is a rite of passage to show that your psychic powers are now active, so it is kind of appropriate. It sounds like a story for children though, like the tooth fairy. Do they tell their kids that the spirit visits them and gives them magic powers? I sure hope that it was just a problem with the translation and not the real name.
These two sure do look like the same girl, but with different hair.
Overall the animation besides the beginning is nice, the story is not good, and the characters have shown no distinct characteristics. There is nothing really remarkable about this series.
