Neither Rinne no Lagrange nor Senki Zesshou Symphogear caught my attention. So I am putting them together for convenience.
Rinne no Lagrange
Rinne no Lagrange is about a peppy girl named Madoka that is willing to help all kinds of people. She heads an unpopular club called the Jersey Club which appears to help out all different kinds of clubs. Madoka is approached by a girl in a uniform who wants to be her friend. Immediately upon becoming her friend she wants to request something of her, which is to pilot a robot.
This show seems to follow the standard robot show where the girl is suddenly needed to pilot a robot. The catch is that in this one that barely makes sense, since she is just a warm body in the robot. She doesn’t even have to control it. I bet that would have been handy with some of the kids from Evangelion, especially Shinji. Even with the pact thing, it is pretty silly that she is the only one that can sit inside that robot and not do anything. I know she does control it at the end, but what is the point?
Also there is the traditional bad guy to fight right away, but at least this bad guy is easy on the eyes. So far the great evil appears to be nothing but beautiful men. I wonder if she can capture a handsome man of her own to “interrogate” or something.
Overall I have seen much better mecha shows than Rinne no Lagrange and this show seems to miss the point at times.

If you would like to watch Rinne no Lagrange it is streaming on VIZ.
Senki Zesshou Symphogear
Senki Zesshou Symphogear is about Hibiki who goes to a concert to see her favorite group Zwei Wing. During the concert something horrible happens and the group known as Noise attacks. Many people are killed and Hibiki is seriously injured by the Noise. She is saved though by Zwei Wing who happen to be magical girls who use music to activate their powers against the Noise.
Years later Hibiki still idolizes Zwei Wing and wants to live her life to the fullest because of the chance to live they gave her. Unfortunately the Noise attacks the area she is in one day, and while trying to save herself and a young girl she is cornered. The only thing she can think of to do is sing.
A dark magical girl world, where people are flat out killed including the magical girls. I have totally never seen this before, oh wait I have. I am glad they decided to step it up and have someone who looks important die right at the beginning. That is slightly different. It just seems like this is trying to be the new grim dark magical girl show, but I just don’t like it so far.Which is not a good sign since I normally like magical girl shows.
The character designs do not fit with the kind of show they are trying to portray, at least with the enemies. It is hard to believe that something that looks like it is off a children’s show or the Power Rangers is going to actually kill someone. Watching people run in fear from them is pretty amusing. I think that if they are trying to take this show so seriously the character designs should go along with that.
The ending seemed particularly bad with things going right at just the last second. How convenient can things be?
Overall the story wasn’t really bad if you like the standard evil things are randomly killing people scenario. Mostly Senki Zesshou Symphogear just didn’t stand out in any way for me.

I agree, both of these were pretty mediocre. I don’t think I’ll watch either one of these again.
