Red Data Girl is about a girl with special spiritual powers. Whenever she touches electronics they are destroyed. Izumiko’s whole life from where she goes to school to how she wears her hair is decided for her. When Izumiko tries to go against the plan for her life by first cutting her hair everyone is shocked. Even little things like cutting her hair have an effect on her powers. Mizuki is brought in by his father Sagara to protect Izumiko and be her manservant. Mizuki does not like that plan and is taking his anger out on Izumiko.
The story so far in Red Data Girl is not very impressive. A girl with magical powers that needs to be protected has been done to death. Hopefully now that the premise has been introduced they will move on to more interesting things. Like what kind of powers does she have besides talking to people over long distances. Considering she could have used an electronic piece to do that instead I am not impressed so far. If the powers do not get much more impressive I do not understand why she needs to be protected so much. Wouldn’t it be smarter to just keep her away from electronics? Despite not being impressed so far I still have hopes for this one since the source is a series of novels.
The artwork as usual for P.A. Works looks very nice. It really helps give clues about the area that Izumiko lives in. I like the country feel of the show and even thing like how long they had her ride to school show how sheltered she is from others. Obviously she does not often see people outside of her family apart from school.
Overall Red Data Girl is not very interesting right off the bat, but it has promise to be better. The artwork is great and I am keeping an eye on it for now.
Status: Watching for now
