Kyoukai no Kanata starts out with a boy deciding to try to stop a girl from committing suicide. The girl responds by stabbing him in the chest with a sword made from her own blood. The boy does not die because Akihito is a half -youmu and immortal. Mirai does not quit stabbing him after the initial time and stalks him to attack him more in order to practice being a Spirit World Warrior. Somehow that leads to Akihito helping Mirai to gain the confidence to challenge herself with fighting a real youmu.
Kyoukai no Kanata is interesting in that it is a show from Kyoto Animation that is not about high school kids doing things with their club or just hanging around school. It is one of the most action packed shows I have seen from them. I usually do not have to say this, but it helps that the action in this show is real to the characters and not just in their imaginations. This is a good direction for them and I hope they can keep up the pace this anime has had so far.
The relationship between Akihito and Mirai is pretty interesting. Akihito is being attacked, but still can’t help hoping that Mirai likes him because she looks good in glasses. While he is trying to get Mirai to stop attacking him it seems like he genuinely wants to help her and feels bad for her. Mirai does not treat him just like prey either although she does not want to hang out with anyone because she feels guilty about her past.
Overall I came into Kyoukai no Kanata not expecting very much and it totally changed my opinion. The art is nice, the characters are likeable, and the story is pretty interesting. I could see this show going places.
