Kill la Kill is about a school girl who goes to a school run by the student council to look for the person responsible for killing her dad. Ryuko has half of a giant pair of scissors and she is looking for the owner of the other half. Right off the bat after coming to Honnōji Academy Ryuko tries to confront the leader of the student council Satsuki, but one of her minions takes down Ryuko easily due to the Goku uniform. The Goku uniform powers up the students that receive them and they are more powered up the more stars are on the uniform. After getting beaten up Ryuko gets her own special uniform and takes down the guy who beat her before.
Kill la Kill is being made by two of the guys that worked on Gurren Lagann which shows in the style of the show. The feeling of the show is more over the top with action mixed with comedy. People are dying and the situation is pretty serious, but it never feels gloomy. It is a delicate balance, which the show did very well. I was a fan of Trigger after they made Inferno Cop and it is good that they can make a normal length animes as well.
The characters in Kill la Kill are very well done. The main character is the most typical character since she is totally driven by revenge and does not let anything get in her way. The leader of the student council Satsuki seems more appropriate as a dictator than a student council leader. It will be interesting to find out where she got her Goku uniforms from. Luckily there is Mako in the mix to keep the show pretty lighthearted with her constant talking and easygoing attitude.
Overall the first episode looks really good, but I am worried that this show could go into enemy of the day territory. If it goes down that path it could get old very quickly even with the over the top style of this show. Hopefully I am worrying too much and the writers will keep it fresh.
Status: Watching.
