Karneval is about two boys named Nai and Gareki. Nai is looking for another boy named Karoku and his only clue is a circus i.d. Circus is a government defense organization that also runs a circus. Circus is especially interesting in getting rid of Varuga who can turn people into monsters with their blood.
Karneval has a lot going on, but still manages to be boring. There are bombs and attacks throughout the first two episodes, but each time at the crucial moment they are cut off before they get really exciting. For instance when the Varuga had tied up all the fighters and Nai is the only one left the sheep come after him out of nowhere. From there the situation is just over for no reason. The fighters kicked a rock to get free, inexplicably. This seems to be a trend in anime lately to not finish the action sequences properly. It always gives me a feeling of being let down.
Most of the cast of characters seem upset all the time except for Yogi who is cheerful. Does not make for fun times to have a bunch of grumpy people interacting with each other. I know they are having problems fighting Varuga, but other shows have cheerful characters that are fighting things.
Look at all those dead eyes on those creepy sheep. That is what they need in a mascot.
The little sheep mascots are so weird. Usually a mascot is supposed to be cute, but these mascots are creepy and have strange powers.
Overall this series could pick up if they do not keep cutting off the action, but then there is still the weird premise to contend with. Also there are hints of boy’s love coming up which will alienate a lot of people.
