There is absolutely no point in trying to summarize what happened in Joshiraku. The girls spend most of the time in the back of the theater discussing random things and the discussion is all over the place. There is no story to speak of and the conversations they are having aren’t very interesting. For instance the breakdown of what casual dress really means. They got through work clothes, night clothes, and nudity before ending it. Did we really need an in depth discussion on casual clothing?
The best part of the first episode of Joshiraku was at the beginning when one of the characters said the show should not have been made. The character brought up the valid point that the show is too dialogue heavy and centered around just one place. Many shows have been popular that are dialogue heavy and do not have many settings. I do not really think this will be one of them though. I do have to wonder what made them decide to animate this out of everything. This premise does not seem like something that really needed to be brought to life. Apparently I am not alone in thinking that. I mean they bothered to break the fourth wall right away to talk about it.
Joshiraku is really hard to follow at some points because the characters are talking about purely Japanese things. At one point they are discussing something to do with the way dog is written in Japanese and talking about how a stroke could go in many different places. This lead to putting the stroke on top of the rest of the word which somehow equated to impaling a dog. Soon after there was a traditional pun, but I have no idea where that was. There was also a segment about yelling things over the ocean and the angle it would go at. I am guessing that was Japanese because otherwise it just does not make any sense. With things like that it is just frustrating to watch and wonder what they are talking about. I guess with notes to explain it might be better or if it was localized.
Overall the parts that made some sense to me were not great and the other parts I cannot judge since I do not understand them. This show seems to be for people who like watching a group of girls talk about random things.
