Hataraku Maou-sama is about an arch-devil who tries to take over his world, but right before he is able to achieve it a hero comes along to turn the tables. To save himself Maou goes through a portal to return and take over the world later. Unexpectedly Maou ends up in a world where he is losing his powers and has to live as normal people do. Maou has his underling research magic and devils in hopes of gaining back what he has lost and taking over both worlds. Unfortunately somewhere along the way Maou has become accustomed to his new life and now acts like an underling himself.
Hataraku Maou-sama did a good job portraying the stranger in a strange land. The main characters did learn the language easily, but there was an explanation behind it. They did struggle some learning the ways of the new land and still have not caught onto things like the hierarchy in Japan. Hopefully their confusion will provide more good moments in the future.
After watching episode 2 I really like how they showed the hero and overlord being taken in by the police. Usually in many shows there are big flashy fights in the streets and the fighters get away with it. The two people getting taken in by the police seems way more accurate.
Unfortunately the show took a bad turn when it decided to have the hero that goes after a demon king to stay over at his house. At first I was furious because it looked like they were going to say she was afraid of the shooter. That was not the case, but I still do not see how the hero would stay at her sworn enemy’s house even if she dropped her purse. Especially since she has been trying to kill him. This would be the perfect time for him to just get rid of her.
Overall Hataraku Maou-sama is pretty funny and the story is amusing. It is already showing some flaws, but it could still overcome them later on.
