Golden Time is about a young man named Banri who is just starting law school. Unfortunately he is unfamiliar with the area and does not know anyone. While trying to follow some girls to find another part of campus Banri meets up with Mitsuo who is also going to the same law school as him and they become fast friends. Before the two make it into the building of their law school a girl walks up and hits Mitsuo in the face with some roses. In order to save face Banri pretends that they are passing out roses to new female students. After Mitsuo and Banri get to class Mitsuo shares his back story with the girl who hit him with the roses named Koko. Turns out Koko followed Mitsuo to college which is driving Mitsuo crazy. Banri can not see anything wrong with Koko and seems to be attracted to her.
The first episode of Golden Time had a pretty normal set up for a harem show with the main character Banri magically finding new girls everywhere he went. The show has a pretty normal cast mostly too with an older motherly type and a loli type both appearing during the episode. Fortunately the main female seems to be a bit different in the fact that she is not even interested in Banri. Having a guy chasing a girl that isn’t interested in him while the rest of the cast chases him could be interesting. Hopefully she will not abandon her obsession with Mitsuo too quickly or this could easily fall back on the normal harem hijinks.
At the end of the first episode of Golden Time there was a scene where Banri discusses that he is ready to fall in love and open his heart to someone. That is really annoying. Everyone watching Golden Time should already know what kind of show this is going to be. There is no reason to beat the audience over the head with it. I hope that in the future they show the audience what is going on instead of telling them directly. This is not a show for babies after all.
Overall Golden Time could break the mold and be a decent harem show especially since it is from the same person who wrote Toradora. Unfortunately the first episode does not show very much creativity and is pretty boring.
