Chihayafuru is about a girl who idolizes her sister and believes that her dream is to see her sister become the most beautiful in Japan. Her friend Arata helps her to see that the dream should be about herself and not about her sister.
The first episode of Chihayafuru starts with a bunch of male students running to see a model’s sister to see if she is really beautiful. The model’s sister is the main character Chihaya. She is considered beauty without meaning at her school because she is pretty to look at, but ruins it whenever she does anything.
She is desperately trying to start a competitive club for karuta at her school. She is not succeeding, when suddenly she meets someone that makes her feel better about the situation. The second part of the show is all about how she started to get into karuta because of her friend Arata.
Chihaya is a great main character. She is willing to stand up for people and work for what she wants. She has a dream that she is working towards. I feel for her because she is in her sister’s shadow to some extent, since everyone will compare her to her beauty queen sister. She also seems to be somewhat of an outsider because of her hobby, which I can totally understand. Haven’t seen enough of the side characters to make a judgment on them though.
The story wasn’t fantastic, but I think the characters make up for it. Not being able to find people to join your club or finding your true passion are not the most exciting things. I am interested to see what they do with these characters and this card game later in the series.
Status: I am still watching Chihayafuru for now. May change my mind later.
