Accel World follows the adventures of a boy who is on a quest to become the fattest boy in the world. Unfortunately he is hindered by bullies who take his food. Just kidding. Accel world follows a bullied boy who escapes into a virtual world.
The Story of Accel World
Once again, the story of this show is less than original. In the future we have virtual reality links where you can control your avatar directly. They have also bridged the gap between computer user and fumbling moron by allowing you to type on virtual keyboards. A classmate takes pity on him after seeing him in the virtual world. She keys him into yet another reality, between the virtual and real world. A world where human thought can be accelerated in order to slow time to a crawl. She helps stop his bullying and awakens him to a new world and way of life.
The Art
The art is rather average. While quite functional, it is not great. I would argue that this is the main reason the show has received a poor reception thus far. I greatly hope that the art style improves in future editions.What is so puzzling is that some of the CG looks better than the regular art. It is usually the other way around. However it would make sense for this series sense the virtual sequences are quite important.
The Final Verdict
As someone who has read the manga, I am a bit biased. I know that the story does pick up later and has some decent fights. It gives decent insight into the feelings of the characters. Overall, this series has some great potential that simply has not been explored yet. It has a wealth of vibrant and interesting designs for characters as well. Many of them parallel things you might have seen in Digimon when you were younger.
