Exploring the Stardock 2014 Lineup

Many of us best know Stardock for being a small company that grew into a larger one with Sins of a Solar Empire. So what happens when a small company like this grows into a bigger one? Let us take a look at that and their upcoming games.

Small Companies Go Mobile

Stardock recently launched a mobile branch after seeing growth. They are going to be putting out a game known as Dead Man’s Draw. In it you play a puzzle card game with cannons, swords and maps. Basically you pay a pirate searching for treasure and the cards detail your journey.

So why do so many companies move into the mobile arena as they grow? Two reasons:

  • Mobile games are easy and inexpensive to make
  • There is a significant demand for them

There are also many other sub-reasons like ease of distribution. However if you are a game developer you will likely move into the mobile arena eventually.

They are also releasing two other games:

  • Star Trails which is a space exploration game which appears to have a simple interface
  • Hero Busters which appears to be a lemmings-style game

As you can see these are a far cry from the complexity of their earlier game. This is probably an attempt to gather more money as the bigger you grow the more pressure there is for cash results.

Stardock and Set Rules

While not every company follows the rules of “Simpler” and “Mobile” it seems that they are. We cannot say whether they will end up continuing this trend. It is however too soon to say whether these things mean bad in this case. They usually do but there are always exceptions. For those who think this is a turn for the better feel free to check out the Stardock site.
