A while back everyone was up in arms about limited installs for games. That faded with time and assurances that it wasn’t actually going to happen like that. Now people are concerned about the 24 hour check in policy. Today we’re going to look at the recent derailing of a tournament due to it and discuss whether it is needed.
The Killer Instinct Tournament Derail
Many of you have probably already seen the tournament where the 24 hour check-in DRM didn’t pass and they had to stop playing. Fans of the Microsoft 24 hour plugin policy blame the user. That’s very easy to do, but it’s also completely understandable for an MS product to have a bug.
It’s unclear as of now what exactly happened and some of the videos have been taken down. If that doesn’t seem weird to you, then we don’t know what to say. You can take a look at the event above.
Is the Microsoft 24 Hour Plugin Policy Needed?
There certainly was something that needed to be done. Modded Xbox models were highly prevalent in the previous generation. The question is whether this is the best solution. There have to be other ways to handle this that do not cause problems for those who paid legitimately. Do we have a solution? Not really. But it shouldn’t just be glossed over and ignored in the way many outlets handled it.
As an industry mega giant they could certainly come out with better DRM controls. That would most likely not be cost effective though so they won’t. Our concern is whether this could derail gameplay at some tournaments due to technical mistakes or even bugs. Let us know how you feel about the situation as well. Maybe you have an even better solution for this problem.
